How to Type Urdu in Microsoft Word
Word supports Urdu well once the language and direction are set correctly.
Steps
- Add Urdu as a keyboard language in your operating system settings.
- Switch to the Urdu keyboard from the taskbar or language key.
- In Word, click the right-to-left paragraph button on the Home tab.
- Choose an Urdu-capable font such as a Nastaliq or Naskh font installed on your computer.
Using the online editor first
If you have no Urdu keyboard installed, write in the online Urdu editor, copy the text and paste it into Word. Because it is Unicode, it will display correctly.
Common problems
- Punctuation jumping to the wrong side: set the paragraph to right-to-left.
- Boxes instead of letters: the selected font lacks Urdu glyphs; change the font.
Conclusion
Set language, direction and font once, and Urdu in Word becomes routine.
