Urdu copied from a PDF, a website or a chat usually arrives with problems you cannot always see: double spaces, English question marks and commas, Arabic look-alike letters, odd digits, hidden direction marks and lines broken in the middle of a sentence. What each option does

• Clean up spaces and blank lines. Turns repeated spaces and tabs into one space, changes non-breaking spaces into normal spaces, removes spaces at the start and end of every line, and reduces three or more blank lines to a single blank line.
• Remove hidden characters. Deletes invisible characters that arrive from web pages, PDFs and chat apps: zero-width space, zero-width joiner, byte-order mark, left-to-right and right-to-left marks, and soft hyphens. The zero-width non-joiner is kept because Urdu sometimes needs it for correct letter shapes. If a letter shape changes after formatting, untick this option.
• Use Urdu punctuation. After an Urdu letter, changes ? , ; . into ؟ ، ؛ ۔, removes the space before the mark and adds one after it. Decimal numbers such as 3.5, web addresses such as muneebcomposing.com and English sentences are left alone, and a comma between digits (۱،۲۰۰) is not split.
• Fix look-alike Arabic letters. Changes Arabic kaf ك to Urdu ک, Arabic yeh ي and ى to ی, Arabic heh ه to ہ, and joins a split alif + madda into آ. Searching and sorting treat the Arabic and Urdu versions as different letters. Do not use it on Arabic or Persian quotations, where the original letters are correct.
• Reduce repeated punctuation. Turns ؟؟؟ into ؟, ،، into ، and !!! into !. Runs of ۔۔۔ are left alone because they may be an intended ellipsis.
• Convert old PDF / InPage letter shapes. Some PDFs and old fonts store each letter in its initial, middle or final shape as a separate character (for example ﻣ ﺮ ﺑ ﺎ). This converts them back to ordinary letters (م ر ب ا). It cannot reorder text that a PDF has extracted backwards.
• Join broken lines (PDF copy). Joins lines that were broken by a PDF or a narrow column into one flowing paragraph. Blank lines stay as paragraph breaks. Do not use it on poetry or shayari, where every line break is intended.
• Remove aerab. Removes zabar, zer, pesh, shadda, jazm and the other marks above and below letters. Useful for search and plain text. Leave it off for poetry and religious text, where the marks matter.
• Remove kashida (ـ). Removes the stretching character used in decorative headings, so words are stored in their plain form.
• Digits. Urdu digits ۴ ۵ ۶ are shaped differently from the Arabic-Indic digits ٤ ٥ ٦ that many keyboards and PDFs produce. The first choice fixes only the Arabic-Indic ones. “All digits” also changes phone numbers, years and prices written with 0-9.

Good to know

• Start with “Basic cleanup”. Add the other options only when you see the problem they fix.
• The tool applies fixed rules. It does not correct spelling or grammar and cannot tell whether a word is Urdu, Arabic or Persian, so read the result before using it.
